An unpleasant odor reported across parts of Weston was traced to a nearby dam rather than the sewer system, according to a September 18 report by WDTV citing the Lewis County Health Department.
Health officials said a Sept. 17 inspection found that naturally occurring hydrogen sulfide was released when deeper water from the reservoir mixed and rose during a water release. The department described the smell as an aesthetic nuisance rather than a health hazard and said the release was clearing Friday and expected to dissipate naturally.
Residents who observe an actual sewer-system failure or sewage surfacing in ditches or waterways were urged to contact the Lewis County Health Department at 304-269-8218. The department's official website lists that same public contact number; LC Portal did not independently measure the odor or water conditions.
