Stonewall Jackson Lake urged boaters to always wear a life jacket and an engine cutoff device in an Oct. 9 safety reminder.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake office advises anyone whose boat capsizes to stay with the boat unless shore is very close. Even when the shoreline looks easy to reach, cold water, waves, current, exhaustion or injury can make the swim deadly, the agency warned.
