Weston Moose Lodge members turned a Saturday potluck into a free community meal and clothing distribution for neighbors still navigating the effects of the July 21 flood.
The gathering ran from 1 to 4 p.m. August 29. Lodge members prepared and donated the food, and guests could eat at the lodge or take carryout boxes. Free clothing was also available to anyone who needed it.
Nancy King, a Moose member since 2003, organized the event after seeing how recovery needs continued well beyond the initial emergency. King told the Weston Democrat that the flood's effects reached the broader community, not only residents whose homes or businesses took direct damage.
Turnout was lighter than organizers had hoped, leaving plenty of food available. Attendees Tom Wilson and Susan Brunner described the picnic as another example of Lewis County residents supporting one another while cleanup and rebuilding continue.
The lodge's community role extends beyond this event. The Weston Democrat reported that it also supports local schools, athletic programs, senior citizens and other area causes. Residents should follow the lodge's own announcements for future assistance or community events rather than relying on the now-completed picnic schedule.
