The National Weather Service in Charleston included Alum Bridge among locations a strong thunderstorm could affect in a statement issued at 6:17 p.m. Wednesday, October 14.

At that time, radar showed the storm 10 miles southeast of Harrisville, moving southeast at 25 mph. The statement warned of wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea-size hail. Those observations describe the storm when the statement was issued.

Wind, hail and heavy rain

Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow unsecured objects around, the weather service said. Minor hail damage to vegetation was also possible. Torrential rain was occurring with the storm and could cause localized flooding.

The statement listed Pullman, Auburn, Baldwin, Avon, Grove, Leopold, Troy, Newberne, New Milton, Alum Bridge, Linn, Coxs Mills and Berea as places that could be affected.

What residents should do

The weather service advised anyone outdoors to consider seeking shelter inside a building. Do not drive through flooded roads.

The storm could intensify, the agency said. Residents should monitor local radio and television stations for additional information and possible National Weather Service warnings.
