Lewis County's preliminary unemployment rate was 4.1% in July, according to the latest county estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The federal Local Area Unemployment Statistics series estimates that 6,589 county residents were in the civilian labor force during July. Of those, 6,317 were employed and 272 were unemployed.
The rate declined from 4.4% in June, when the estimates counted 295 unemployed residents in a labor force of 6,643. That is a decrease of 0.3 percentage points, but the underlying estimates also show 31 fewer employed residents and 54 fewer people in the labor force from June to July. A falling rate therefore does not by itself mean local employment grew during the month.
Compared with July 2025, the rate was down from 4.5%. The estimates show 78 more employed residents, 21 fewer unemployed residents and a labor force that was larger by 57 people than a year earlier.
County figures are based on where people live, not where they work, and the monthly county series is not seasonally adjusted. July's figures are preliminary and may be revised in a later release.
