Lewis schools retain universal-meal eligibility as state SNAP rolls fall

Current state data keeps all six public schools marked for Community Eligibility, but fewer SNAP certifications could pressure future federal meal reimbursements.

All six Lewis County public schools remain marked “Yes” for the federal Community Eligibility Provision in West Virginia's current 2026-27 data, even as newly reported figures show fewer children receiving SNAP statewide.

Community Eligibility allows qualifying schools to serve breakfast and lunch without charge to every enrolled student. Instead of collecting a meal application from each household, the federal government reimburses schools using the percentage of students directly certified through SNAP and other qualifying programs.

The current West Virginia Department of Education workbook lists 1,337 identified students among 2,153 enrolled at Jane Lew Elementary, Leading Creek Elementary, Lewis County High School, Peterson-Central Elementary, Roanoke Elementary and Robert L. Bland Middle School. Of those students, 967 were directly certified through SNAP. Each of the six public schools carries a “Yes” CEP indication in the state file.

That means there is no announced immediate loss of universal meals in Lewis County. The new reporting raises a longer-term funding concern: if fewer eligible families remain connected to SNAP, the directly certified share used in future school-meal reimbursement calculations can fall. The current state workbook is an eligibility and certification dataset, not a notice that cafeteria service or family charges have changed.

West Virginia Watch reported Wednesday that statewide child SNAP enrollment declined from 93,566 in June 2025 to 89,556 in May 2026—a reduction of 4,010. Total state enrollment fell by 14,486 over the same period, from 269,687 to 255,201. The newsroom said the child figures came from Department of Human Services data and were separately confirmed by the department.

Federal work and eligibility rules changed during that period, but the statewide totals do not show why each household left the program and do not provide a Lewis County breakdown. Families should not assume that an adult's eligibility notice automatically resolves whether a child or another household member remains eligible.

Lewis County residents can screen or apply for SNAP through WV PATH and can ask the Department of Human Services to review a case by calling 1-877-716-1212. The Lewis County DoHS office is at 91 Arnold Drive in Weston and is listed at 304-269-6820. Families with questions about current school meal service should contact their school or Lewis County Schools directly.

The underlying statewide enrollment figures are detailed by West Virginia Watch. WVDE publishes the current Community Eligibility data, and the department's meal-reimbursement guidance explains the SNAP-linked formula.
