Kevin Diamond, the senior aerospace science and JROTC instructor at Lewis County High School, is bringing a 28-year military career into his work with students.
A September 11 report by WV News says Diamond served in the West Virginia National Guard and U.S. Air Force before retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 2025. He told the newspaper that teaching gives him a chance to help build “citizens of character.”
Diamond grew up in a military family and began considering enlistment while attending West Virginia University. The report says education benefits discussed by fraternity brothers in the National Guard helped lead him to enlist. He later earned degrees in anthropology and sociology and a master’s degree in strategic leadership.
The report describes Diamond’s classroom as a place where he keeps military memorabilia and connects his service experience with mentorship. One former student, now active duty in the Air Force, recently visited him after basic training and gave him a flag.
