The State 4-H/FFA Livestock Roundup runs September 16–20 at Jackson’s Mill, with public show times now available for Friday and Saturday and the calf sale set for Sunday morning. Activities take place in the Multipurpose Building on the airstrip grounds.

In his September 8 agriculture column for the Weston Democrat, Lewis County WVU Extension agent Bruce Loyd reports 268 calf entries, including 81 from Lewis County. The roundup is in its 96th year and features feeder calves born earlier this year. Loyd says all but a few entries will be sold.

For residents planning a visit, the published schedule is:

  • Friday, September 18, noon: Farmer Breeding Heifer Show. The Junior Breeding Heifer Show follows, then the Market Heifer Show. Those later divisions use a rolling schedule, so they do not have separate fixed start times. Youth Showmanship follows the heifer shows Friday afternoon.
  • Saturday, September 19, 9 a.m.: Farmer Steer Show, followed by the Junior Steer Show. A separate start time for the junior division is not published.
  • Sunday, September 20, 10 a.m.: Calf sale.

The overall event dates begin Wednesday, September 16, but the column does not provide public program hours for Wednesday or Thursday. It also does not state an admission price or a finishing time for the shows or sale. Check with the organizers before planning around an unspecified time.

The roundup connects youth livestock projects with buyers from West Virginia and beyond. Although many consignments come from 4-H and FFA members, Loyd says farmers may also consign calves and account for about one-third of this year’s entries.

Schedule update, September 13: The Portal’s earlier report had only the overall dates from a social-media announcement. We have now reviewed the Extension agent’s full column and added its confirmed venue and show/sale schedule to this article and the calendar. The earlier source archive is retained.
