Some children affected by West Virginia's July storms were included in a final round of automatic School Clothing Allowance renewals that the Department of Human Services expected to issue by August 29.
That makes the statewide update relevant in Lewis County, one of the communities covered by the July disaster declaration. West Virginia Watch reported that DoHS expected the 2026 program to reach approximately 57,436 children. Of that total, 10,867 were automatic renewals.
The agency said it used automatic enrollment narrowly for two groups: children affected by the July storms, and eligible children ages 4 through 10 who received the clothing benefit in 2025. Each eligible child receives $200 for school-appropriate clothing such as shirts, pants, dresses, shoes, coats and underwear. DoHS expected the program to use about $11.5 million in federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funding this year.
This is not a reopening of the application window. The Bureau for Family Assistance says the 2026 application period closed at 11:59 p.m. July 27 after the available funding was exhausted. Applications filed by that deadline will be approved if the eligibility requirements are met; later applications will be denied.
Families who expected a payment should check their benefit status rather than submit a new application. The official School Clothing Assistance page carries the current application notice, while West Virginia Watch's report explains the final automatic-renewal round and the unresolved questions surrounding this year's rollout.
