The National Weather Service in Charleston issued a flash flood warning for central Lewis County and nearby portions of north-central West Virginia until 1:30 a.m. EDT on Sept. 22.
At 10:28 p.m. EDT Monday, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. The National Weather Service said 1 to 3 inches of rain had fallen and that flash flooding was ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
The warning includes Weston, Horner, Walkersville, French Creek, Sand Fork, Burnsville and other locations. It covers Interstate 79 between mile markers 74 and 101, as well as portions of Route 33.
The National Weather Service advised drivers to turn around rather than enter flooded roads, especially at night, when flood hazards are harder to recognize. Flooding can affect small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses and other low-lying or poorly drained areas. Read the warning from the National Weather Service.
